Diversity, Dedication and Community Commitment

Over 350 women who comprise the membership of the Junior League of Syracuse (JLS)represent a myriad of educational levels, professions, interests, ethnicities, religions and life experiences.

The multitude of volunteer and training opportunities as well as the potential for camaraderie promise a fulfilling experience for each unique member of the League.  Though a diverse group, the common denominator is our commitment to improving the community.

Though no JLS member is typical, the profile representative of today’s Active JLS member is a married mother of two who works outside the home.  She holds at least a bachelor’s degree and spends a minimum of two hours per week in volunteer activities.

Members of the JLS impact the community not only through their involvement with the League, but also through their professional contributions, commitment to their children’s schools or places of worship and service on boards or committees of other community organizations.

Last year, members spent more than 8,000 cumulative hours on outside volunteer efforts:

  • Local charities and advocacy groups including Consortium for Children’s Services, United Way and Vera House
  • neighborhood and community activities including SPCA, firefighter and police groups
  • lake/park/community center groups and relocation assistance
  • churches/synagogues
  • schools including educational/teaching activities, school board, PTAs, mentoring and fundraising
  • health and medical related activities including hospitals, nursing homes, Hospice, American Heart Association, Onondaga County Medical Society Alliance, American Heart Association, Francis House, The Komen Foundation/Race for the Cure and Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of America
  • cultural activities including Everson Museum, WCNY, Syracuse Stage, MOST, Syracuse Symphony Orchestra and library activities
  • youth sports, college alumni work and political groups.

The New Member Class of 2008-2009 will represent another diverse group of enthusiastic women joining the Junior League of Syracuse.

If you are interest in finding out more about membership or joining the next New Member Class, please contact us at 315-423-9773 or JLSyracuse@centralny.twcbc.com.
